Seh Dari

Seh-Dari is located on the eastern side of the Barri Khwabgah (Mughal Gallery) inside Jahangir’s Quadrangle. The Sikh period architectural styled pavilion is called Seh Dari (three door building – in Persian language) because it has three entrances. The structure consists of three domed chambers, with the central room being the largest and tallest. Three sides of the building feature arched entrances that lead into the Diwan-i-Khas courtyard. The fourth side is enclosed by sandstone screens with geometric carvings, which historically allowed cool air to flow into the building from the Ravi River before the river shifted its path.

It was designated as the office for Faqir Syed Noor-ud-din—a highly esteemed courtier of Maharaja Ranjit Singh—this edifice accommodated a multifaceted portfolio of state responsibilities, ranging from the civil governance of the capital to the rigorous oversight of military artillery reserves and the intricate logistical management of provisions for visiting dignitaries. It was once decorated with beautiful fresco, portraying designs of flora and fauna, and also the scenes shown reflected multiple Hindu religious themes suggesting the syncretic artistic practices during the Sikh period.
